At the start of winter, the Qualinet Group suffered a significant data theft during a cyberattack, prompting the company to activate its emergency response plan. A specialized team was quickly mobilized to assess the scope of the attack and mitigate any further damage. In an official statement, Qualinet’s operations director, Roger Vigneault, expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging that some data had been stolen despite efforts to secure their systems.
Upon conducting an initial analysis, the company was able to restore its systems promptly. However, it was clear that sensitive data had been compromised.
Vigneault emphasized that the company’s commitment to transparency led them to disclose the breach to the public. Customers impacted by the data theft would be notified in accordance with Bill 25, a regulation that mandates specific notification protocols in cases of data breaches.
The case was handed over to the Quebec City Police Service for further investigation, while the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec was also notified about the breach. In a public statement, Qualinet’s president, Éric Pichette, addressed the issue candidly, urging other businesses to recognize the growing problem of cyberattacks and to take the threat seriously.
He noted that many companies tend to avoid discussing such incidents openly, but Qualinet opted for full transparency to encourage broader awareness within the business community.
Pichette also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in modern cybercrime, warning that criminals are increasingly using AI to automate the identification of vulnerabilities and the encryption of sensitive data. He stressed the importance of Canadian businesses enhancing their cybersecurity efforts, stating that the more secure organizations become, the less likely they are to become targets for cybercriminals. Recent surveys indicated that a significant percentage of Canadian companies have been affected by cyberattacks, emphasizing the need for vigilance across the business sector.
