MSI has swiftly addressed a critical issue that led to blue screens of death (BSOD) on Windows computers following the installation of August 2023 preview updates.
This problem specifically affected MSI’s Intel 700 and 600 Series motherboards, and its root cause was linked to a firmware setting related to Intel Hybrid Architecture. The BSOD bug was observed only on systems equipped with Intel’s 13th Gen Core i9 CPU after the installation of specific Windows updates.
MSI has released BIOS updates to tackle this problem, with the forthcoming BIOS updates including fixes for the ‘UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR’ issue. Users are advised to download these updates from MSI’s official website for their respective motherboard models in the coming weeks, with all updates expected to be available by the end of September.
This prompt response from MSI comes after Microsoft recently attributed blue screen issues stemming from last month’s preview updates to OEM vendors, just a week before MSI’s announcement. Microsoft initially acknowledged the problem two weeks prior, shortly after releasing the August optional cumulative update. The affected systems included those running Windows 11 21H2/22H2 and Windows 10 22H2.
Microsoft stated that the problematic optional updates might automatically uninstall to enable Windows to start as expected and advised users not to reinstall them to avoid further complications. This information was corroborated by user reports indicating that the preview updates were automatically rolled back after multiple system restarts.
To mitigate the problem, Microsoft decided to halt the distribution of the buggy updates to potentially impacted devices and initiated collaboration with device manufacturers (OEMs) to address the issue effectively.
