Some Windows users may encounter a BitLocker Recovery screen after applying the recent Microsoft Patch Tuesday updates. BitLocker is a security feature that encrypts entire drives, preventing unauthorized access to the data on stolen or lost devices. However, the latest update has caused problems for certain systems without clear explanation from Microsoft.
The issue affects systems running Windows 10, Windows 11, and multiple server versions with Device Encryption enabled. Users may see the BitLocker Recovery screen, which typically only appears after entering an incorrect PIN too many times or making hardware changes. The screen will prompt them to enter a recovery key to regain access.
To find the recovery key, users can log in to their Microsoft account on another device and access their registered devices. Each device will display the necessary information, including the Key ID and Recovery Key, needed to unlock the affected system. The Key ID shown on the BitLocker screen must match the one listed online for the correct recovery key to be used.
Once the correct Recovery Key is entered, the system should return to the normal login screen. Microsoft has acknowledged the issue on the Windows release health dashboard but has not provided a detailed explanation for the cause of the problem.
