Microsoft has recently addressed a critical issue affecting classic Outlook versions that causes crashes when users write, reply to, or forward emails. This problem surfaced after updating to Outlook versions 365, 2021, 2019, and 2016, with Version 2412 (Build 18324.20168) released on January 7, 2025. The crashes are accompanied by exception code “0xc0000005,” and users can confirm the issue by checking the Windows Event Viewer Application Log for crash Event 1000 or 1001. Microsoft acknowledged the bug and assured customers that a fix would be rolled out to users on the Current Channel by January 28, 2025, with Version 2501 Build 18429.20000.
While the permanent fix is being prepared, Microsoft has shared a temporary solution for users affected by the issue. The workaround involves rolling back Outlook to version 2411 (Build 18227.20162), which is not impacted by the bug. Affected users can perform this action by using the Command Prompt in Windows, which requires administrator access. After opening Command Prompt, users must enter a specific set of commands to revert Outlook to the previous version until the official patch is available.
This issue with Outlook adds to the list of known problems that Microsoft has been actively addressing over recent months.
In addition to the current crash problem, Microsoft recently resolved a similar issue that caused Outlook and other Microsoft 365 applications to crash on Windows Server 2016 and 2019. The company has also provided workarounds for other persistent issues, such as crashes upon opening Outlook and Gmail sign-in problems for classic Outlook users. These ongoing fixes reflect Microsoft’s commitment to improving the stability of their email clients.
Looking ahead, Microsoft also announced that it plans to automatically install the new Outlook email client on Windows 10 systems starting with the February 2025 security update. This move is part of the company’s broader strategy to transition users to the updated email client. As Outlook continues to evolve, Microsoft aims to ensure that users experience minimal disruptions and that critical bugs are addressed promptly, allowing for smooth email management and communication.
