Lagerlof LLP recently disclosed a data breach to the Attorney General of Montana, revealing that sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information within its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized party. The breach was detected on March 15, 2024, when Lagerlof noticed suspicious activity involving an employee’s email account. This prompted an internal investigation to determine the nature and extent of the incident.
The investigation revealed that the unauthorized actor gained access to the compromised email account between January 29, 2024, and March 18, 2024. During this period, sensitive information including names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account details, and medical records may have been exposed. Lagerlof launched a detailed review of the impacted data to identify the affected individuals and assess the severity of the breach.
As part of their response, on August 13, 2024, Lagerlof began notifying individuals whose data may have been compromised. The notification letters provided a list of the specific types of information impacted for each individual and included an offer of 12 months of complimentary identity monitoring services to help safeguard against potential misuse of the exposed data.
