Russian hackers, believed to be affiliated with the group NoName, launched a series of cyberattacks targeting several Swiss municipalities and banks on Tuesday. These attacks occurred during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, an event that was anticipated by the National Cyber Security Centre to be a potential target for cyber activity. The hackers’ main aim appears to be attracting attention, as indicated by Switzerland’s cyber security office. The attacks, which were reported by the Bluewin.ch news portal, primarily affected cantonal banks in Zurich and Vaud, as well as the municipalities of Adligenswil, Kriens, and Ebikon in Lucerne.
The cyberattack method used was a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack
In which websites and online services are overwhelmed with massive traffic to render them inaccessible. The DDoS assaults did not result in any data breaches or leaks, but they significantly disrupted online operations. The attacks essentially crippled the targeted websites and applications, causing inconvenience to users and service interruptions.
This latest round of DDoS attacks is part of a broader pattern of cyber aggression attributed to the NoName hacker group. The same group had previously disrupted several federal government websites in June 2023, highlighting their ongoing campaign against Swiss targets. These types of cyberattacks, while often disruptive, typically do not involve the theft of data, instead focusing on creating online chaos and sending a political or ideological message.
Despite the challenges posed by such cyberattacks, Swiss authorities have remained vigilant in responding to these incidents. While DDoS attacks are difficult to prevent entirely, the National Cyber Security Centre and other cybersecurity experts continue to monitor the situation. The incident underscores the importance of cybersecurity measures, especially during high-profile events like the World Economic Forum, which attract attention from cyber adversaries seeking to make a statement.
