Escondido School District Data Breach

Escondido Union High School District (EUHSD) recently disclosed a data breach that occurred in November 2023. The district identified suspicious activity on its computer network on or around November 6, 2023, and subsequently discovered that malware had infected its systems, preventing access to certain files. The investigation revealed that an unauthorized actor had access to specific EUHSD systems between November 3 and November 5, 2023. By February 28, 2024, it was determined that information related to current and former employees, employee dependents, and students was potentially accessed.

The district has not publicly disclosed the exact information involved or the number of individuals impacted by the breach. However, the compromised data may include names, Social Security numbers, and other sensitive personal information. Although there is no evidence of identity theft or fraud resulting from the incident, EUHSD is notifying those affected to provide information and resources to protect their personal information.

In response to the breach, EUHSD has taken steps to secure its systems and launched a thorough investigation. The district has also reviewed its policies, procedures, and processes related to data storage and access to prevent similar incidents in the future. Additionally, EUHSD has notified law enforcement and is cooperating with their investigation into the breach.

To further assist those affected, EUHSD is offering 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services through Cyberscout. Impacted individuals are encouraged to enroll in these services to protect their personal information. The district remains committed to data privacy and security, taking measures to safeguard the information in its care.
