The breach was first identified on June 22, 2024, when suspicious activity was detected within Catholic Charities’ network. The organization quickly secured its network and began investigating the cause of the breach with the assistance of external cybersecurity experts. Through their investigation, Catholic Charities confirmed that an unauthorized party had gained access to parts of its network that contained confidential consumer information. The breach affected numerous individuals, and the organization worked diligently to identify all impacted data.
By January 27, 2025, Catholic Charities completed its review of the compromised files to determine the specific information that had been accessed and taken. This review revealed that, depending on the individual, the information involved could include their name, Social Security number, date of birth, driver’s license number, and health-related data.
In response to the breach, the organization began mailing data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information had been exposed, detailing the types of data that had been affected.
