Harrods Cyberattack Limits Internet Access

In early November 2024, Cell C, South Africa’s fourth-largest mobile network operator, was targeted by a cyberattack. The hacking group RansomHouse claimed responsibility for the breach and released 2TB of stolen data, including sensitive personal and financial information. The data exposed in the attack included full names, contact details, ID numbers, banking details, medical records, driver’s license numbers, and passport details, with the number of affected individuals still unclear.

Cell C CEO Jorge Mendes addressed the breach in an open letter, urging individuals to protect themselves against potential fraud, identity theft, and phishing.

The company expressed deep regret over the breach, acknowledging the concern it may cause for employees, customers, and partners. Cell C has assured stakeholders that it is taking immediate action to contain the incident and prevent further damage, including working with international cybersecurity experts and cooperating with the relevant authorities.

Since discovering the attack, Cell C has implemented measures to enhance system security and minimize the breach’s impact. These actions include engaging forensic experts, notifying authorities, and communicating with affected stakeholders.

Cell C has also been monitoring the misuse of the stolen data, advising individuals to remain vigilant against potential fraudulent activities.

The mobile operator has committed to maintaining transparency and accountability, emphasizing its dedication to protecting the interests of its customers and partners. Additionally, Cell C encourages affected individuals to apply for Protective Registration through the South African Fraud Prevention Services to safeguard their information.
