Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Stephen Jones announced that the National Anti Scam Centre (NASC) will integrate with the Australian Financial Crimes Exchange (AFCX). The AFCX, funded by Australian banks, facilitates coordination between public and private sectors for better intelligence and data sharing to tackle financial and cyber crimes.
This partnership aims to enhance efforts in disrupting and intercepting scammer activities, such as identifying and shutting down scam websites. By joining the AFCX, the NASC will be able to exchange critical information like scam phone numbers, URLs, and bank accounts used by scammers.
The collaboration will strengthen the overall approach to combating scams by creating an effective “intel loop.” This loop ensures that information reported to banks, telecommunications companies, or Scamwatch can be utilized to prevent further harm to Australians.
Australian Banking Association CEO Anna Bligh praised the integration as a significant step in uniting government bodies, banks, telecoms, and digital platforms. She emphasized that this collective effort will make it more challenging for scammers to operate in Australia.
