North Korean Hackers Steal Military Data

South Korea‘s ruling People Power Party (PPP) has revealed a significant cybersecurity breach involving North Korean hackers, who have reportedly stolen critical information about South Korea’s K2 tanks and “Baekdu” and “Geumgang” spy planes. This stolen data includes detailed technical specifications and operational details of these key military assets, raising concerns about North Korea’s potential to undermine South Korean military surveillance and gain an advantage on the battlefield.

The breach reportedly occurred when engineers transferring from a tank part supplier to a rival company took along sensitive design blueprints and development reports on the K2 tank. This data, which includes specifics on the tank’s overpressure system, was intended for export to a Middle Eastern country, potentially amplifying the scope of the leak beyond South Korean borders. Additionally, North Korean hackers infiltrated a South Korean defense contractor responsible for creating operational and maintenance manuals for the Baekdu and Geumgang spy planes, stealing information about their technology and recent upgrades.

In response to this alarming incident, the PPP is urging immediate action to strengthen national cybersecurity measures. They are calling for a collaborative effort among political parties to enact the Basic Cyber Security Act and expand espionage laws to better protect against foreign cyber threats. The PPP emphasizes that enhanced cybersecurity protocols are crucial to safeguarding sensitive military data and preventing future breaches.

This incident underscores the increasing boldness of North Korean cyberattacks, as highlighted by the April 2024 warning from South Korea’s National Police Agency about heightened targeting by notorious DPRK threat groups. The police’s subsequent clean-up operation revealed that North Korean operatives had compromised multiple defense-related companies since late 2022, allowing them to conduct extensive intelligence collection.
