Zimbabwe Prioritizes Cybersecurity Training

On August 24, 2024, the Zimbabwean government emphasized its commitment to strengthening national cybersecurity by launching an extensive training program for public officials. The program, held in Harare, successfully graduated over 100 government employees, equipping them with crucial knowledge on global cybersecurity trends, international security standards, and enterprise data protection practices. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Zimbabwe’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capabilities and improve the security of public services.

The impetus for this training came in response to several high-profile cyber incidents in Zimbabwe, including attacks on social media accounts and the systems of a major bank. Dr. Tatenda Maveteras, the Minister of Information Communication Technology, highlighted the urgent need for improved cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive data and digital assets. The training aims to address these vulnerabilities and build a more resilient digital infrastructure.

Huawei Zimbabwe, a long-time partner of the Zimbabwean government, has played a key role in supporting this initiative. Managing Director Yang Shengwan praised the government’s proactive approach and reiterated Huawei’s commitment to cybersecurity through advanced technologies and expert training. Shengwan underscored the company’s significant investment in research and development to ensure its technologies are robust against evolving cyber threats.

Deputy Director General of POTRAZ, Alfred Marisa, emphasized the growing importance of cybersecurity in the face of rapidly increasing data consumption. By providing public servants with essential cybersecurity skills and fostering strategic partnerships with the private sector, the government aims to enhance its digital defenses and position Zimbabwe as a leader in regional cybersecurity efforts. This comprehensive approach reflects the country’s determination to safeguard its digital future amidst evolving cyber challenges.
