XWorm is a type of malware known for its sophisticated obfuscation techniques that allow it to evade detection and pose a significant threat to cybersecurity. Recently analyzed by NetSkope researchers, a new variant of XWorm has been discovered, which is delivered through a Windows script file and has evolved to version 5.6 since its initial discovery in 2022. This malware uses various advanced methods, such as reflective code loading and process injection, to maintain persistence and communicate with its command and control server while executing extensive system reconnaissance.

The new variant initiates its infection chain via a Windows Script File that downloads and executes an obfuscated PowerShell script, which then creates multiple files and establishes persistence through a scheduled task. XWorm employs techniques like AES-ECB encryption to maintain communication with its C2 server and has introduced new features, including the ability to remove plugins and report response times. Its capabilities allow it to access sensitive information, gain remote access, and deploy additional malware while continuing to evade detection. XWorm also modifies host files to redirect DNS requests for malicious purposes and can launch DDoS attacks by sending repetitive POST requests to target IP addresses.

Its extensive command execution features allow it to perform system manipulation tasks like shutdowns and logoffs while stealthily hiding its operations from users. Additionally, it captures screenshots and transmits them in JPEG format, showcasing its capability to monitor and control infected systems.

With its diverse toolkit and evolving delivery methods, XWorm represents a considerable threat to cybersecurity, making it crucial for organizations to stay informed and prepared against such sophisticated malware. Its continuous development emphasizes the importance of implementing robust security measures to protect sensitive information and maintain operational integrity in an increasingly challenging threat landscape.
