Xiaomi Devices Hit by Major Security Flaws

Multiple security vulnerabilities have been identified in Xiaomi Android devices, impacting various applications and system components. A report by mobile security firm Oversecured reveals that these flaws enable unauthorized access to system activities, receivers, and services with elevated privileges. The vulnerabilities also facilitate theft of arbitrary files and exposure of phone settings and Xiaomi account data. The affected apps and components include Gallery, GetApps, Mi Video, MIUI Bluetooth, Phone Services, Print Spooler, Security, Security Core Component, Settings, ShareMe, System Tracing, and Xiaomi Cloud.

Some of the most significant flaws include a shell command injection bug in the System Tracing app and vulnerabilities in the Settings app that could lead to data theft and leakage of information about Bluetooth devices, connected Wi-Fi networks, and emergency contacts. While certain components such as Phone Services, Print Spooler, Settings, and System Tracing originate from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), they have been modified by Xiaomi, resulting in these security issues.

Additionally, a memory corruption flaw was found in the GetApps app, stemming from an Android library called LiveEventBus, which remains unpatched despite being reported over a year ago. The Mi Video app also poses a risk by using implicit intents to broadcast Xiaomi account information, such as username and email address, which could be intercepted by third-party apps.

Oversecured reported these issues to Xiaomi between April 25 and April 30, 2023. Users are strongly advised to apply the latest updates provided by Xiaomi to safeguard against these vulnerabilities and protect their personal information from potential threats.
