X has announced the expansion of its passkey support to its Android app, following its initial rollout for iOS users. This move aims to enhance security by replacing traditional passwords with a more robust digital authentication method. Passkeys, which became popular last year, provide a stronger alternative to passwords that can be compromised through various means, including guessing or theft.
Previously, X introduced passkeys to iOS users in the US in January and later extended the feature globally in April. The new security option is designed to offer better protection for user accounts by creating a unique digital credential for authentication. Passkeys are increasingly being adopted by tech companies and online services as a preferred method of securing accounts.
For Android users, the process of setting up passkeys involves navigating through the app’s settings. Users will still need to use a password to create an account initially. After setting up the account, they can enable passkeys by accessing the “Additional password protection” option under the Security tab in the app. This update is part of X’s broader effort to enhance account security and provide users with advanced protection options. While passkeys are not yet a replacement for initial account setup, they represent a significant step towards reducing reliance on traditional passwords and improving overall account security.
