The White House has issued a set of directives to federal agencies regarding the implementation of safeguards and councils for artificial intelligence (AI) usage. Led by Vice President Kamala Harris, the initiative aims to ensure AI safety, protect privacy, promote equity, and foster innovation. Federal agencies are required to implement safeguards by December 1, testing and monitoring AI’s impact on the public while addressing algorithmic discrimination issues prevalent in various sectors like healthcare and criminal justice.
Notably, the order emphasizes transparency, requiring agencies to release annual inventories of AI usage and its potential impact on rights and safety. It also prioritizes upskilling federal workers in AI and designating chief AI officers within agencies. Furthermore, the establishment of AI governance boards chaired by deputy secretaries and the convening of a Chief AI Officer Council by the Office of Management and Budget are mandated to ensure effective oversight and coordination.
The new policy signifies the government’s commitment to leading by example in the responsible and equitable use of AI, aligning with President Biden’s October executive order on AI usage. Despite challenges in regulating AI, the administration’s efforts underscore the importance of collaboration, documentation, and talent development in addressing biases and ensuring AI fairness. The directive to hire 100 AI professionals and bridge the AI skills gap reflects a proactive approach to building a capable workforce for sustainable innovation in the AI landscape.
