Vietnam Post Ransomware Attack

Vietnam Post, the state-owned postal service, successfully restored its operational services following a ransomware attack that occurred on June 4. Although the cyberattack affected its postal and delivery operations, financial, administrative, and goods distribution services remained operational and unaffected. Promptly after discovering the attack, Vietnam Post took decisive action by notifying security authorities, disconnecting its IT systems to contain the breach, and initiating efforts to restore normalcy.

Collaborating closely with government agencies and local cybersecurity experts, Vietnam Post focused on safeguarding customer data and securing its systems against further threats. The incident’s specifics, including the identity of the attackers and any ransom demands, were not disclosed by Vietnam Post. This cyber incident isn’t an isolated case for the postal service, as previous vulnerabilities in its cybersecurity posture were exposed last November, raising concerns about data security and system integrity.

Vietnam has witnessed a rise in cyberattacks, particularly ransomware incidents targeting government entities, financial services, and industrial systems. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) of Vietnam reported over 13,900 cyber incidents last year alone, marking a notable increase from previous years. Major corporations like VnDirect, PVOil, and local telecommunications providers have also been recent targets of large-scale cyber intrusions, highlighting the pervasive cybersecurity challenges faced by Vietnam’s public and private sectors.

In response to these escalating cyber threats, Vietnam’s prime minister issued a directive in April urging ministries and local government agencies to reassess their cybersecurity readiness. This directive underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening cybersecurity measures across the nation to protect critical infrastructure and sensitive data from future cyberattacks. As Vietnam continues to enhance its cybersecurity framework, vigilance and proactive measures remain crucial in mitigating the evolving threats posed by cyber adversaries.
