Verizon, a prominent telecommunications and media company in the United States, recently disclosed an insider data breach affecting a significant portion of its workforce. The breach, discovered in December 2023, involved unauthorized access by a Verizon employee to sensitive information of approximately 63,206 employees. Although the breach was identified internally, it took nearly three months for Verizon to detect and respond to the incident, highlighting potential gaps in its security protocols.
The compromised data varied per employee and included personal details such as full names, Social Security numbers, addresses, and compensation information. However, Verizon reassured that customer information remained unaffected by the breach. Despite the breach, Verizon emphasized that there is currently no evidence of malicious exploitation or widespread dissemination of the exposed data beyond the company’s confines.
In response to the breach, Verizon is actively working to enhance its internal security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Additionally, the company has taken steps to assist affected employees by offering enrollment in a two-year identity theft protection and credit monitoring service. While the incident has not been referred to law enforcement, Verizon continues to conduct an internal review and remains transparent in its communication with regulators and impacted individuals.
