Varta AG Cyberattack Knocks 5 Plants Offline

German automotive battery manufacturer Varta AG disclosed a cyberattack that occurred on February 12th, 2024, affecting parts of its IT systems, including five production plants and administrative operations. In response to the attack, the company took proactive measures, disconnecting its IT systems and production facilities from the internet for security reasons. While the extent of the damage is still under review, Varta assured that it is prioritizing data integrity and has implemented precautionary measures outlined in its emergency plan.

As a top global supplier in the automotive, industrial, and consumer markets, Varta brand batteries are widely distributed across the European Union. The cyberattack prompted the company to mobilize a task force comprised of cybersecurity experts and data forensics specialists to expedite the restoration of normal operations and address the incident promptly. The company emphasized its commitment to dealing with the cyberattack swiftly to minimize disruptions and ensure the security of its systems and data.

Despite the temporary shutdown of production plants and IT systems, Varta AG affirmed its dedication to maintaining operational resilience and safeguarding its infrastructure against cyber threats. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by companies in the automotive sector and highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to protect critical manufacturing operations. Varta’s proactive response to the cyberattack reflects its commitment to mitigating risks and preserving the integrity of its operations amidst evolving cybersecurity threats.
