User Data Exposed in i2VPN Security Incident

June 7, 2023

Hackers have reportedly breached the admin credentials of i2VPN, a widely used freemium VPN proxy server app, leading to a potential compromise of sensitive user information. The breach was discovered when cybersecurity researchers found that hackers had shared what appeared to be confidential data from i2VPN on Telegram.

Although no user data was directly released, the leaked information includes the admin’s email address, password, and screenshots of the dashboard displaying data centers and users’ subscription details.

Given i2VPN’s significant user base, with over 500,000 downloads from the Google Play Store alone, the alleged breach has the potential to impact a substantial number of individuals.

If the claims are accurate, the exposed information could include user IDs, account names, registered email addresses, and subscription-related details such as payment methods and expiry dates. The implications of this breach are serious, as hackers with access to such data can exploit it for various malicious purposes, including surveillance of users’ activities and perpetration of fraud.

Users of i2VPN are strongly advised to take immediate steps to enhance their security. This includes evaluating whether to continue using the app, reviewing and securing accounts accessed while connected to the VPN service, and conducting scans on devices for sensitive files or communications. i2VPN must act swiftly to address the security vulnerabilities and reinforce its system to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Users should stay vigilant and remain informed about any official announcements or notifications from i2VPN regarding the breach and recommended security measures.

This breach serves as a reminder of the importance of robust cybersecurity practices and caution when sharing personal information online. In an increasingly interconnected world, incidents like these underscore the need for individuals to prioritize their online privacy and take necessary precautions to safeguard their data from potential breaches.
