Healthcare breaches surge in Q1 2024, with data compromises up 53% from the same period in 2023, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center’s report. While the number of breaches nearly doubled, there was a 72% reduction in the number of victims compared to Q1 2023, totaling 24,474,351 individuals affected by the 841 data breaches.
Financial services overtook healthcare as the most attacked industry, with 224 notices and over 18 million records breached in Q1 2024. However, healthcare still saw a significant increase in breaches, accounting for 124 notices and more than 6 million records breached. Healthcare remained prominent in the top 10 compromises, with six of the ten largest data breaches in the quarter.
Supply chain attacks tripled in Q1 2024, affecting 243 organizations and involving the data of 7.5 million individuals. Cyberattacks, phishing/smishing/BEC attacks, and system and human error were identified as the primary causes of data breaches. However, an alarming trend emerged where breach notices often failed to specify the root cause, with over 50% of compromises lacking this crucial information in Q1 2024.
