The University of Rochester is currently conducting an investigation into a cybersecurity attack, as stated on its website. The breach, attributed to a software vulnerability in a third-party file transfer company’s product, has impacted not only the University but also 2,500 organizations globally.
The University’s IT staff is collaborating with the FBI and an external data forensic firm to assess the compromised information and determine necessary actions, with updates to be provided as they become available.
In response to the incident, the University is strongly advising students, faculty, staff, and dependents to take immediate measures to safeguard their personal information.
This includes adopting strong passwords, changing existing passwords, utilizing two-factor or multi-factor authentication, and monitoring credit card and bank records. If any suspicious activity is noticed, individuals are urged to promptly contact their financial institutions and credit monitoring agencies.
13WHAM, a local news outlet, reached out to the University for additional comments. In response, spokesperson Sara Miller conveyed that the ongoing forensic data investigation currently limits the available information.
However, the University is committed to providing further updates as the investigation progresses, ensuring transparency and timely communication to all stakeholders.
