United Urology Group has recently disclosed a significant data breach that has affected numerous individuals. Unauthorized access to the organization’s network occurred between April 27 and May 6, 2024, and the breach was detected on July 2, 2024. Following the discovery, United Urology Group engaged external cybersecurity experts to investigate the extent of the compromise. The comprehensive investigation, which concluded on July 15, 2024, determined that a limited amount of personal information was accessed and removed. This compromised data includes full names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, financial account details, passport numbers, usernames and passwords associated with online accounts, medical records, and health insurance information.
Although there have been no confirmed reports of identity theft or improper use of the stolen data so far, United Urology Group is taking proactive measures to protect affected individuals. Notification letters began being sent out around August 14, 2024, to those impacted by the breach. These letters provide guidance on protective steps, including enrolling in complimentary credit monitoring services if Social Security numbers were involved, placing fraud alerts or security freezes on credit files, obtaining free credit reports, and carefully reviewing financial statements and credit reports for any signs of fraudulent activity. Additionally, the notice advises individuals on safeguarding against medical identity theft.
The organization has expressed its sincere apologies for the incident and reassured stakeholders of its commitment to safeguarding personal information. In response to the breach, United Urology Group has implemented enhanced security measures and continues to review and update its practices to better protect against future cyber threats. The company is dedicated to strengthening its internal controls and improving overall data security to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
