Ukraine Launches Cyber Range in Kyiv Hangar

Ukraine has launched the Cyber Range in a hangar located in Kyiv, marking a significant initiative to enhance the country’s cybersecurity capabilities amidst ongoing threats from Russia. This innovative program repurposes a space usually reserved for displaying retired aircraft into a training facility where military, intelligence personnel, and civilians can come together to practice defending against and executing counterattacks against cyber threats. Organized in teams of five, participants engage in exercises modeled on real Russian cyberattacks, utilizing a dashboard that tracks their progress and decisions during simulations.

One of the program’s distinguishing features is its accessibility to a broad range of participants, including students, researchers, and employees from critical infrastructure sectors. To join the Cyber Range, interested individuals must submit an official request, which the organizers review to assess trustworthiness. The initiative aims to foster a diverse pool of cybersecurity talent, as organizers plan to offer regular workshops and competitions that could ultimately accommodate up to a thousand participants and even host international events in the future.

The Cyber Range operates independently of any European or American influence, which allows it to rapidly adapt its training programs to address the specific threats posed by Russian cyber operations. Developed by Cyber Unit Technologies, the exercises are tailored to the skill levels of the participants, ensuring that everyone from beginners to advanced professionals is appropriately challenged. Scenarios will evolve based on the latest developments in Russian cyber activities, providing a continuously updated learning environment that reflects real-world challenges.

Despite the risks associated with centralizing cybersecurity expertise in one location, organizers remain cautious and proactive. The Cyber Range has measures in place to protect participant information, requiring the use of nicknames instead of real names and not storing any personal data. This strategy mitigates the potential for Russian hackers to extract sensitive information while allowing Ukrainian participants to develop their skills in a secure environment, underscoring the nation’s commitment to strengthening its cyber defenses amid ongoing hostilities.
