UK Phases Out Physical Immigration Docs

0212 UK to Replace Biometric Residence Permits with Digital Visas

The UK government is poised to phase out physical immigration documents like Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) by 2025, embracing digital visas instead. This shift mirrors practices in developed countries such as Australia and aims to streamline border control processes. Under the new system, existing BRP and BRC holders will need to transition to e-visas, which offer digital proof of immigration status.

The transition to e-visas is part of the broader digital transformation of the UK’s border and immigration system, promising enhanced security and cost-savings while providing greater convenience for individuals and authorities. Existing BRP holders will be required to register for a UKVI online account to view or prove their immigration status digitally. This move is expected to extend digital conveniences to nationals of all countries and safeguard against identity fraud through secure linkage with biometric information.

The upcoming changes signify a significant departure from physical document reliance, offering secure and efficient methods for proving immigration status online. The shift towards e-visas will also facilitate seamless access to benefits and public services for immigrants, as government bodies gain secure access to individuals’ status information. While the transition unfolds, existing BRP and physical document holders are advised to stay informed via official channels for updates on required actions and timelines.
