Truck and trailer rental company U-Haul recently disclosed a data breach affecting customers in the United States and Canada. The breach, which occurred in December, involved unauthorized access to a system used by U-Haul dealers to manage reservations and customer records. Although the original disclosure did not specify the number of affected individuals, U-Haul later confirmed that approximately 67,000 customers were impacted by the breach.
The compromised data included driver’s license numbers and other identification card numbers, although U-Haul assured customers that its payment system was not involved in the incident. Following the discovery of the breach on December 5, U-Haul promptly assessed its extent and initiated notification procedures for affected customers. Additionally, the company enlisted the assistance of an unnamed cybersecurity firm to investigate the incident and is providing free credit-monitoring services to victims.
In response to the breach, U-Haul emphasized its commitment to enhancing security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. This includes measures such as changing passwords for affected accounts and implementing additional security safeguards and controls. Despite this breach, U-Haul continues to operate its rental, moving supplies, and self-storage services, maintaining its position as a prominent player in the transportation and storage industry.
