Twitter is facing a new challenge with the infiltration of bots and accounts promoting adult content, infiltrating Direct Messages and interactions on the platform. This problem has persisted despite Elon Musk’s promises to address bots and fake accounts on Twitter following his acquisition of the platform.
Security researchers have identified numerous spam accounts initiating unsolicited direct message conversations and interactions, enticing users to click on links leading to hookup and NSFW sites. Despite suspending some bot accounts, Twitter has yet to find an effective solution, leaving the platform in a constant battle.
MalwareHunterTeam, a security research group, has exposed multiple Twitter accounts that operate as spam bots, injecting themselves into interactions through likes. Their goal is to entice users to visit their profiles and click on the links provided, which lead to explicit content.
Twitter users, including journalist Chris Geidner and IT professional Mikel Garcia, have shared instances of receiving unsolicited messages and replies from porn bots.
Although Twitter has been suspending bot accounts as they appear, the platform has not implemented a successful solution to combat spam and bots, leading to an ongoing challenge.
Elon Musk previously expressed determination to tackle spam bots but has yet to deliver a lasting solution. Musk recently announced temporary rate limits on Twitter to address data scraping and system manipulation, though it remains unclear if this targets bot-initiated activities.
Without an effective strategy to curb fake accounts and bots, Twitter’s spam problem persists, posing challenges for user experience and platform integrity.
