Turkey Bans Roblox Shortly After Instagram

Turkey has recently imposed a ban on Roblox, the popular children’s video game, in response to concerns about inappropriate content and child exploitation. This decision follows a similar restriction placed on Instagram just days earlier, on August 2, 2024. The ban on Roblox comes after reports surfaced about the platform hosting virtual gatherings that allegedly promoted pedophilia and the distribution of Robux, the game’s virtual currency, through bots. Turkish officials have expressed their concern over the challenges in regulating harmful content on such platforms, leading to the decision to ban Roblox.

The controversy surrounding Instagram’s ban is also notable. The platform was restricted following claims that it censored posts expressing condolences for the death of Ismail Haniyeh, a senior Hamas official killed on July 31, 2024. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Instagram’s actions as “digital fascism,” accusing the platform of suppressing free expression by removing posts related to the Palestinian conflict. Erdogan’s criticism highlights the broader tension between digital freedom and governmental control over online content.

The decision to ban Roblox reflects Turkey’s ongoing efforts to regulate and control online spaces within its borders. The Directorate of Communications in Turkey cited the presence of inappropriate content and the exploitation of children as primary reasons for the ban. The country’s approach to digital censorship has sparked discussions about the balance between protecting users and maintaining freedom of expression in the digital age.

In the wake of these bans, there have been reports of increased difficulties accessing VPN services in Turkey, with the Freedom of Expression Association (IFOD) noting that popular VPN providers, such as NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN, have been blocked. This has raised concerns about the impact of digital censorship on internet freedom and user privacy in the country, further complicating Turkey’s already contentious relationship with global tech platforms.
