Turning Point of Central California (TPOCC), a provider of mental health, children’s, housing, and addiction recovery services, recently disclosed a data breach affecting at least 500 individuals to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (OCR). This initial figure of 500 is commonly used as a placeholder for OCR reporting purposes and indicates the breach is under active review. TPOCC has been assessing the extent of the breach and will notify affected individuals once the review of compromised files is complete.
The breach investigation began after TPOCC detected suspicious activity in its network on May 31, 2024. Cybersecurity experts from a third party were engaged to conduct a thorough forensic investigation, confirming on June 12 that unauthorized access had indeed taken place. The intrusion potentially exposed files containing sensitive information, including names, addresses, and Social Security numbers, raising significant privacy concerns for impacted clients.
As a proactive measure, TPOCC is conducting a comprehensive review of its network security to address vulnerabilities and improve its defenses against similar attacks. The organization has pledged to implement additional security controls, though specific measures have not yet been detailed. This commitment to bolstering security reflects TPOCC’s efforts to prevent future breaches and safeguard sensitive client data.
In support of those affected, TPOCC is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services to individuals whose Social Security numbers were involved. This added protection aims to help clients detect and address any unauthorized activity linked to the breach. TPOCC’s response underscores its intent to minimize harm to its clients and reinforce trust within the community it serves.
