Town of Apex Hit by Ransomware Attack

Apex, North Carolina, is grappling with a cybersecurity incident that has disrupted key town systems, reportedly due to an attempted ransomware attack. The incident, first detected on Tuesday and confirmed shortly after, prompted the town to take offline essential services such as utility billing and building permits while launching a thorough investigation. Apex officials quickly mobilized resources, including engaging the North Carolina Joint Cybersecurity Task Force and federal law enforcement agencies, to address the breach.

Despite the disruption to administrative functions, Apex assured residents that emergency services and public safety operations remained fully operational throughout the incident. In a statement, the town emphasized its proactive emergency response protocols, which ensured no interruptions in vital services crucial for community safety. Officials underscored their commitment to resolving the situation promptly and responsibly, leveraging the expertise of legal counsel and cybersecurity professionals in the recovery process.

Apex reiterated its adherence to North Carolina state laws regarding cyber incidents, stating it would not engage in communication or negotiations with the perpetrators responsible for the attack. The town spokesperson affirmed this stance, emphasizing a policy of non-payment and non-cooperation with ransom demands, aligning with broader cybersecurity best practices. As investigations into the incident continue, Apex residents and businesses are advised to remain vigilant and assured of ongoing efforts to safeguard town systems and data from further threats.

The situation in Apex highlights the persistent cybersecurity challenges faced by municipalities nationwide, underscoring the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and emergency preparedness in safeguarding public services and infrastructure from digital threats.
