On August 27, 2024, Title Financial Corporation (TFC) reported a data breach to the Attorney General of Montana, revealing that an unauthorized party had accessed portions of its computer network. The breach raised significant concerns about the potential exposure of sensitive consumer information. TFC’s notice indicated that upon discovering the breach, the company promptly initiated an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident, demonstrating its commitment to addressing the security issue effectively.

The investigation began on March 4, 2024, when TFC detected unusual activity within its computer network. This prompted the organization to secure its systems and undertake a thorough examination to understand what, if any, consumer information may have been compromised. TFC confirmed that the unauthorized access involved confidential consumer information stored in its IT network. While the specific types of leaked data were not disclosed in the public breach letter, TFC’s proactive measures indicated its awareness of the severity of the incident.

After completing its investigation on July 29, 2024, TFC reviewed the compromised files to identify the information that had been accessed and the individuals affected. The company emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in dealing with the aftermath of the breach. Subsequently, on August 27, 2024, TFC began mailing personalized data breach notification letters to impacted consumers. These letters aimed to inform individuals about the situation, including details about the type of information that may have been compromised.

Founded in 1905 and based in Blackfoot, Idaho, Title Financial Corporation provides a range of title and escrow services to clients in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. With multiple locations across these states and employing over 267 individuals, TFC generates approximately $40 million in annual revenue. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by organizations in safeguarding sensitive information and underscores the importance of swift action and communication in response to data breaches. TFC’s commitment to protecting its clients’ data and keeping them informed during this incident reflects the growing emphasis on data security in the real estate services industry.
