Three Critical Ivanti CSA Flaws Exploited

Ivanti has issued an urgent alert regarding the active exploitation of three critical vulnerabilities in its Cloud Service Appliance (CSA), identified as CVE-2024-9379, CVE-2024-9380, and CVE-2024-9381. These zero-day flaws have been reported to allow authenticated attackers with administrative privileges to execute arbitrary SQL statements, achieve remote code execution, and bypass established security restrictions. The vulnerabilities are particularly concerning as they can be exploited in combination with another previously patched flaw, CVE-2024-8963, which poses a critical path traversal risk, allowing unauthorized access to restricted functionalities.

According to Ivanti, the vulnerabilities primarily affect users running CSA version 4.6 patch 518 and earlier, with a limited number of customers already having fallen victim to these exploits. However, the company has indicated that there is no evidence of exploitation against those operating CSA version 5.0, which has addressed these issues. The severity of these vulnerabilities underscores the importance of maintaining up-to-date software to mitigate the risk of exploitation.

The details of the vulnerabilities are as follows: CVE-2024-9379, with a CVSS score of 6.5, involves an SQL injection vulnerability in the admin web console; CVE-2024-9380 (CVSS score: 7.2) is an operating system command injection vulnerability that allows remote code execution; and CVE-2024-9381 (CVSS score: 7.2) involves a path traversal vulnerability that enables bypassing of security restrictions. The ability to chain these flaws with the critical CVE-2024-8963 (CVSS score: 9.4) significantly amplifies the risk to affected systems.

In light of these developments, Ivanti is urging all customers to promptly upgrade to the latest version, 5.0.2, and conduct thorough reviews of their systems for any unauthorized modifications to administrative users. Users are also advised to monitor alerts from their endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools for signs of compromise. This warning follows recent updates from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which added another Ivanti-related vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is crucial for organizations to remain vigilant and proactive in securing their systems against potential exploits.
