The ThreatSec hacker group has allegedly targeted the MindX Technology School in Vietnam, claiming responsibility for a cyber attack and potential data breach. MindX Technology School, previously known as Techkids, specializes in teaching programming skills to students and is yet to confirm the cyber incident. The hacker group claims to possess a significant amount of data, including personally identifiable information, stolen from the school, and they have advertised this data for sale on the dark web.
ThreatSec’s involvement was announced on their dark web portal, and the hacktivist group’s claims have raised concerns about the security of educational institutions. This incident comes in the backdrop of a growing trend of cyber attacks targeting schools and educational systems, prompting action from the Biden-Harris Administration to strengthen cybersecurity measures for K-12 schools in the United States.
A recent report revealed that cyber attacks on schools can result in significant disruptions to learning and financial impacts ranging from $50,000 to $1 million for affected school districts.
To address these concerns, the White House has proposed various initiatives, including funding of nearly $200 million to enhance cybersecurity in schools, the establishment of a collaborative Government Coordinating Council, and the release of guidance documents to promote better cyber hygiene in educational institutions.
The ThreatSec hacktivist group’s activities highlight the broader landscape of hacktivism, with various groups collaborating to launch cyber attacks on organizations worldwide, often driven by motives related to corruption and social justice issues.
