The Criminal Court in Thailand has taken decisive action by issuing an order to block the website 9near.org, which posed a significant threat by claiming to have the personal information of 55 million Thai citizens. The operator, identified as “9Near – Hacktivist,” asserted access to sensitive data, including full names, birthdates, ID card numbers, and phone numbers, purportedly obtained from vaccine registration records. This development prompted the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) to intervene promptly.
While Thailand experienced a decline in data breaches from late 2022 to early 2023, recent reports suggest a potential reversal of this trend in 2024. Cybercriminals, identified as Naraka, are reportedly circulating large volumes of stolen personal information, particularly targeting “Know Your Customer” (KYC) documents from breached platforms. The surge in data leaks from consumer-focused platforms in January alone highlights the growing cyber threats in Thailand. The advisory by Resecurity emphasizes the need for robust cybersecurity strategies, stringent data privacy regulations, and fostering a culture of digital vigilance to safeguard citizens’ privacy and security.
