Texas Wesleyan Suffers Breach Exposing PII

Texas Wesleyan University (TXWES) has issued a notice of a significant data breach that occurred on October 6, 2023, potentially affecting sensitive personal information of numerous individuals. The breach was detected after a network disruption led to unauthorized access to specific files. TXWES immediately took action by disconnecting network access and engaging a specialized cybersecurity firm to investigate the incident. The forensic investigation revealed that the compromised data included personal details such as names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security Numbers.

In response to the breach, TXWES has implemented several security measures to enhance its defenses and prevent future incidents. These measures include a comprehensive network disconnection, a mandatory reset of all community user credentials, and the introduction of stricter password requirements. Additionally, TXWES has fortified its security infrastructure by adding Web Application Firewall (WAF) protections, secure DNS/DDOS safeguards, and ensuring multi-factor authentication for all external access. The university has also enhanced its security tools with the deployment of SentinelOne and Huntress solutions.

To support affected individuals, TXWES is providing complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services through TransUnion. Notifications will be sent by mail to those impacted, detailing the specific information that may have been compromised. The university advises all individuals to remain vigilant, review their account statements, and monitor their credit reports for any unusual activity. Steps to protect against identity theft include contacting financial institutions and major credit bureaus to place fraud alerts on credit files.

For further assistance, TXWES has established a dedicated helpline, available at 1-833-603-3849, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The university regrets any inconvenience caused by this incident and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of data privacy and security moving forward. TXWES will continue to assess and enhance its security measures to safeguard the personal information of its community.
