Tennessee Community College Attacked

Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis is currently grappling with a significant cyber incident that has severely impacted its network systems, as reported on July 7 following several days of noticeable server disruptions. The college has swiftly engaged computer forensics experts to conduct a thorough investigation, aiming to ascertain the full extent and nature of the cyber attack. While diligent efforts are underway to restore normal operations, Southwest Tennessee Community College has refrained from specifying a definitive timeline for the resolution, emphasizing the complexity involved in addressing such incidents effectively.

President Tracy D. Hall expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting the college’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding the sensitive information entrusted by students and staff. Recognizing the escalating prevalence of cyber threats in today’s digital landscape, Hall assured the college community of proactive measures being implemented to secure the institution’s systems. She underscored ongoing initiatives to fortify cybersecurity defenses, reflecting a proactive stance towards mitigating future risks and ensuring the resilience of the college’s digital infrastructure.

In response to the cyber attack, Southwest Tennessee Community College has adjusted its operational schedule, postponing the start of Summer II Term classes and extending registration until July 19 to accommodate the disruption and provide students with ample time to enroll. Despite the challenges posed by the incident, the college has maintained continuity in remote work and learning, allowing students to access course materials and engage in academic activities without interruption. Essential campus services, including childcare centers on the Macon Cove and Union Avenue campuses, continue to operate normally to minimize disruption for students and staff.

While most campus operations persist, the Follett Bookstore remains temporarily closed, prompting students to utilize online resources for purchasing required textbooks and materials. For individuals encountering difficulties accessing email or other affected systems such as the Southwest Portal-My.Southwest, PAWS, and Banner, Southwest Tennessee Community College advises staying updated through official communication channels on Facebook and Instagram.
