Swan Bitcoin CEO Warns of New Phishing Scam

On September 3, 2024, Cory Klippsten, the CEO of Swan Bitcoin, issued an urgent alert to users about a recent phishing scam targeting the platform. The scam involves deceptive “Data Breach Notice” emails that falsely claim Swan Bitcoin has experienced a data breach. These fraudulent emails appear to exploit information from data leaks involving Klaviyo and HubSpot, which occurred in 2022 and affected numerous businesses, including Swan Bitcoin. The malicious emails are designed to deceive users into sending Bitcoin to fraudulent addresses under the guise of resolving a security issue.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Klippsten addressed the phishing attempt directly, reassuring users that Swan Bitcoin has not suffered any data breach. He emphasized that the platform will never request Bitcoin transfers via email and warned users against responding to such communications. Klippsten’s message was clear: any email asking users to send Bitcoin is part of the scam and should be disregarded. His prompt response and transparent communication aim to prevent users from falling victim to the fraudulent scheme.

The phishing emails in question are crafted to appear legitimate, with the intent of tricking users into transferring Bitcoin to fraudulent addresses. Klippsten explained that each phishing email includes a unique Bitcoin address, which makes it challenging to block specific addresses and prevent the scam from spreading further. Despite the sophistication of the attack, the Swan Bitcoin team’s quick action has helped raise awareness and provide guidance to users on how to recognize and avoid the scam.

This incident highlights the growing threat of phishing attacks in the cryptocurrency space and underscores the importance of vigilance and caution. Users are advised to verify the authenticity of any unsolicited communications, particularly those from financial institutions or digital asset companies. Implementing best practices, such as enabling two-factor authentication (2FA), being skeptical of urgent requests, and regularly updating passwords, can help protect against such cyber threats. By staying informed and cautious, users can better safeguard their assets and mitigate the risks posed by phishing scams.
