St Marys Credit Union Issues Security Alert

August 14, 2024

in Incidents

St. Mary’s Credit Union has alerted its members about a recent security incident related to Mastercard, which may have exposed card information, potentially allowing unauthorized access to their funds. The credit union employs fraud-monitoring software to track unusual spending behaviors and trends in customer accounts, which aids in identifying suspicious transactions. To mitigate risks associated with the incident, St. Mary’s Credit Union has implemented several protective measures to enhance security and safeguard its members’ finances.

As part of these security measures, the credit union has lowered daily limits on debit card transactions, capping ATM withdrawals at $210 and point-of-sale purchases at $500. Members will also receive new cards, which are expected to arrive in the mail within two weeks. To further protect members, the credit union plans to deactivate the existing cards by August 17, 2024. These changes aim to minimize potential financial losses while ensuring that members remain informed throughout the process.

St. Mary’s Credit Union urges members to remain vigilant by closely monitoring their account activity for any unauthorized transactions. If any suspicious activity is detected, members are encouraged to report it immediately. Additionally, under Massachusetts law, members have the right to access any police reports related to the incident. The credit union advises contacting the fraud departments of major credit reporting agencies to discuss available options and encourages members to review their credit reports regularly.

In light of the incident, members are informed of their rights to place a security freeze on their credit reports, which would prevent unauthorized access to their personal information. The credit union has provided resources for members to learn more about identity theft protection and security freezes. St. Mary’s Credit Union emphasizes its commitment to maintaining the security of member data as its top priority and expresses regret for any inconvenience caused by the incident, assuring members that support is readily available through the Member Solutions Center.
