A recent cyberattack at South East Technology University (SETU) in Ireland has raised significant concerns regarding the integrity of its Information Technology (IT) systems. The attack, which targeted the university’s Waterford campus on Friday, prompted an immediate response from the IT team. Fortunately, officials have reported that there is currently no evidence indicating any compromise of data or sensitive information. Simon Woodworth, a lecturer at Cork University Business School, highlighted the importance of containing the cyberattack to prevent it from spreading to other campuses, particularly the Carlow campus. He noted that taking decisive action, such as temporarily shutting down systems, is a prudent strategy until a thorough assessment of the situation can be conducted. “If they can keep this contained, then there’s going to be less mess to clean up afterwards,” Woodworth stated, emphasizing the critical need for a focused response in the early stages of such incidents.
