Somers Public Schools has communicated important information regarding a recent data security incident that may have affected personal information of employees. The school district emphasizes that the privacy and security of the data they maintain are of the utmost importance. Upon identifying the issue, the school district took immediate action to investigate the incident, providing transparency to stakeholders about the circumstances surrounding the data breach.

The incident involved certain payroll information that was inadvertently sent to an employee within the district. This unintended recipient promptly alerted the school district about the error, allowing for a swift response. Following the notification, the district ensured that the sensitive information was permanently deleted by the recipient, who confirmed that no copies were maintained. This quick action highlights the district’s commitment to addressing data breaches responsibly and effectively.

Upon completion of the internal review on August 14, 2024, it was determined that the impacted data contained various personal information, including employees’ first and last names, job titles, employee IDs, financial institution account and routing numbers, salaries, deductions, and Social Security numbers. Understanding the seriousness of this breach, Somers Public Schools is taking significant measures to protect its employees’ information while providing reassurance about the steps taken to mitigate potential risks.

As a precautionary measure, the school district is offering affected individuals a complimentary two-year membership to Experian IdentityWorks Credit 3B. This service is designed to help detect possible misuse of personal information and offers identity protection focused on immediate identification and resolution of identity theft. In addition, the school district has included recommendations for further protective actions, such as placing fraud alerts or security freezes on credit files and regularly reviewing financial account statements for any irregularities. This proactive approach aims to support employees in safeguarding their personal information in light of the recent incident.
