SolarWinds ARM Vulnerability Allows RCE

SolarWinds has recently uncovered critical security vulnerabilities in its Access Rights Manager (ARM) platform, which have been assigned the CVE identifiers CVE-2024-28990 and CVE-2024-28991. The first vulnerability, CVE-2024-28990, pertains to a hard-coded credentials authentication bypass. This flaw allows attackers to circumvent authentication mechanisms, potentially granting unauthorized access to the RabbitMQ management console. The second and more severe vulnerability, CVE-2024-28991, involves remote code execution through deserialization of untrusted data. This flaw could enable authenticated users to execute arbitrary code remotely, posing a significant security threat.

The vulnerabilities were responsibly disclosed by Piotr Bazydlo from the Trend Micro Zero Day Initiative, highlighting the critical role of collaboration between security researchers and software vendors in addressing potential security threats. In response to these vulnerabilities, SolarWinds has released a comprehensive update, Access Rights Manager 2024.3.1. This update not only patches the identified vulnerabilities but also includes a range of bug fixes aimed at improving the overall functionality and security of the ARM platform.

Key fixes included in the update address issues such as incorrect account information display on the Accounts screen, error messages following Active Directory or File Server scans, and improved connectivity for ARM server host names. The update also resolves problems related to the GrantMA workflows and exceptions that occurred after upgrading to version 2024.3. It is crucial for organizations using SolarWinds ARM to apply this update without delay to safeguard against the described vulnerabilities.

SolarWinds has emphasized its commitment to security and transparency, recognizing the valuable contributions of security researchers like Piotr Bazydlo and organizations such as Trend Micro Zero Day Initiative. As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is essential for organizations to remain vigilant and proactive in securing their IT environments. Regular updates, thorough security assessments, and collaboration with trusted security partners are key components of an effective cybersecurity strategy.
