Singing River Health System, a prominent healthcare provider in Mississippi, has revealed that nearly 900,000 people were affected by a ransomware assault in August 2023. This attack disrupted operations across its hospitals and potentially led to data theft, impacting a vast array of services, including hospices, pharmacies, imaging centers, specialty centers, and medical clinics.
The breach exposed sensitive personal and medical information, including full names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, and health records. Despite assurances from Singing River that there’s been no evidence of identity theft or fraud, affected individuals are being offered credit monitoring and identity restoration services for 24 months through IDX.
Attributed to the Rhysida ransomware gang, this breach underscores the ongoing threat to healthcare systems, emphasizing the importance of vigilance, caution in communications, and proactive measures like credit monitoring and security freezes in safeguarding personal information against potential misuse.
