The SBB website experienced a disruption on Monday morning, rendering it unavailable for several hours due to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. While the app allowed users to check train connections, purchasing tickets through the app was not possible during the incident. The railway service communicated via Twitter, acknowledging the technical problem and assuring passengers that alternative options, such as ticket machines and switches, were available. Additionally, tickets could still be purchased through the SBB online shop by creating a guest account.
The disruption lasted from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., affecting various services of the SBB. However, after 10:00 a.m., all services resumed normal operations. The railway service identified the cause of the fault as a DDoS attack and confirmed ongoing investigations by the federal prosecutor. Despite the temporary inconvenience, the SBB website and services were restored, emphasizing the swift resolution of the technical issue. The incident underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber threats and the need for ongoing efforts to enhance cybersecurity measures in the face of evolving challenges.
