The SAFECOM Executive Board is pleased to announce the release of the 2023 SAFECOM Annual Summary. This comprehensive document tracks and reports progress against the priorities and initiatives outlined in the SAFECOM Strategic Plan. It also provides a summary of key SAFECOM products, activities, and meetings conducted throughout 2023, highlighting the program’s efforts and achievements over the past year.
Formed in response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, SAFECOM aims to enhance public safety communications across the United States. The program works tirelessly to improve the operability, interoperability, and security of emergency communications for emergency response providers. This includes communication across state, local, tribal, territorial (SLTT), regional, and international borders, as well as with the Federal Government. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) administers and supports SAFECOM and its stakeholder activities.
SAFECOM’s membership is unique, bringing together over 60 representatives from SLTT emergency responders, appointed and elected officials, and major intergovernmental and national public safety associations. These members coordinate with key stakeholders in emergency communications to address challenges, identify needs, and share best practices. This collaboration ensures that SAFECOM can effectively respond to the evolving landscape of public safety and emergency communications.
To further support the public safety community, SAFECOM has released a new video titled “SAFECOM: Created by Public Safety Stakeholders to Strengthen Emergency Communications.” The video features SAFECOM members discussing the program’s key features, including membership and participation, overall goals, and its role in strengthening the public safety community. This resource provides a detailed look at how SAFECOM helps emergency responders navigate changes in the emergency communications ecosystem.
