British organizations that experience data breaches may receive reduced fines if they proactively report and cooperate with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), according to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the NCSC and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Furthermore, this MOU aims to improve cybersecurity standards and prevent data breaches across the UK while preserving the confidentiality of reports. It highlights that engaging with one agency does not permit the sharing of information with the other, emphasizing the need to maintain trust among reporting organizations.
The MOU also includes provisions for sharing anonymized information about cyber incidents, promoting cybersecurity guidance, and enhancing the country’s cyber resilience.
