Recology Data Breach Affects Thousands

Recology recently disclosed a cyber incident that was discovered on November 2, 2023. Upon detecting unusual activity on its computer network, the company immediately launched an internal investigation, secured its systems, and notified law enforcement and relevant local officials. They also engaged a forensic security firm to ensure the integrity of their computer systems. Initially, Recology identified and notified a group of individuals whose information might have been accessed during the breach.

Following further investigation, Recology has identified additional individuals who may have been affected. The compromised information varies but can include names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account numbers. The company is actively sending written notifications to these newly identified individuals and is providing complimentary identity theft protection services for those whose Social Security numbers or driver’s license numbers were involved.

Recology reassures individuals that there is currently no evidence to suggest that any personal information has been misused for fraud or identity theft. However, they recommend that affected individuals remain vigilant by reviewing account statements and monitoring credit reports closely. In case of any suspicious activity, individuals are advised to notify the respective financial institutions and report any fraudulent activity to the police and their state attorney general.

Additionally, Recology encourages individuals to review tips from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on fraud alerts, security freezes, and steps to avoid identity theft. For more information, individuals can visit the FTC’s website or contact them directly. Affected individuals are also reminded of their right to obtain a free credit report annually from each of the three national credit reporting agencies.
