A ransomware attack has wreaked havoc at the Clay County Courthouse in Indiana, disrupting daily operations and causing significant challenges for the staff. Clay County Emergency Management Director Rob Gambill reported that while the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, 911 Dispatch, and Highway Department remain unaffected and fully operational, courthouse offices, especially the courts, are experiencing severe disruptions.
Gambill emphasized the difficulty in rescheduling court proceedings due to the reliance on affected computer systems. Those with court appearances on July 9 and 10 are advised to call on July 11 for rescheduling instructions. The attack, believed to be linked to a Russia-associated cybercrime syndicate known for deploying the BlackSuit Ransomware, has resulted in the encryption of critical data, making it inaccessible without paying a ransom.
This incident follows a similar attack in Monroe County, Indiana, which crippled local government operations. In response, Clay County officials have isolated affected systems, enlisted cybersecurity experts, and notified law enforcement and relevant agencies. The investigation is ongoing to assess the extent of the data exposure and restore services.
While there is no evidence of personal data compromise, the county remains committed to transparency and enhancing cybersecurity measures. The Clay County Health Department and Courthouse offices will remain closed until further notice, with daily evaluations to determine when they can reopen. Residents and employees are thanked for their patience and understanding during this challenging time.
