Skanlog, a major logistics company that supplies Systembolaget in Sweden, was hit by a ransomware attack on Monday morning, causing significant disruption to its operations. The attack was reported by Dagens Industri, with Aftenposten being the first to cover the story. Skanlog’s Swedish CEO, Mona Zyko, confirmed that the cyber attack led to the complete shutdown of their systems. She described the incident as a ransomware attack where malicious software takes the victim’s system hostage and demands a ransom for a password that will unlock the system.
The ramifications of the cyberattack were immediately felt in the distribution channels. According to reports by Aftonbladet, the disruption could lead to shortages in some goods at Systembolaget stores by the weekend. Teodor Almqvist, a press officer at Systembolaget, indicated that some items could sell out within a few days due to the halted distributions. He noted that all drink categories supplied by Systembolaget might be affected.
Despite the serious nature of the attack and its immediate impact on supply chains, Almqvist reassured customers that the shelves at Systembolaget would not be completely emptied. He stated that about a quarter of their sales volume could be affected, which means the availability of certain beers, wines, and spirits might be compromised depending on the duration of the distribution interruption. The full extent of the impact, however, was still uncertain as the company did not know when distribution would resume.
