The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in the Philippines has launched an investigation into a recent data breach affecting the Bureau of Customs (BOC). The breach, attributed to hackers such as DeathNote Hackers PH, compromised the personal data of over 2,200 employees and 80,000 customers. Deep Web Konek highlighted systemic vulnerabilities within BOC’s cybersecurity framework.
DICT is assessing the breach’s extent, particularly focusing on the compromised reporting system within BOC. Despite the attack, BOC retains network access, and efforts are underway to isolate and investigate the affected systems. DICT Assistant Secretary Renato Paraiso emphasized the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in the face of escalating cyber threats across the Philippines.
As cyberattacks continue to evolve and proliferate in the country, government agencies must prioritize upgrading their cybersecurity infrastructure to protect sensitive data and prevent further breaches. The investigation underscores the critical importance of robust cybersecurity frameworks and proactive measures to mitigate cybersecurity risks in the Philippines.
