Perpignan Radiology Cyberattack Averted

The Coradix-Magnescan medical radiology group, based in Perpignan, France, experienced a significant cyberattack attempt on May 7, 2024, affecting several of its facilities including the medical imaging sites at Saint-Pierre, the Mediterranean polyclinic, the center of Argelès-sur-Mer, and the Vallespir site in Céret. The initial signs of a system malfunction were detected on the previous Friday during routine operations, but it wasn’t until the following Tuesday that the cyber intrusion was fully recognized. This delay in detection highlights the stealthy nature of such cyberattacks and the challenges in early identification.

Upon discovering the attempted intrusion, the Coradix-Magnescan group took swift action to contain the threat, collaborating closely with cybersecurity experts to mitigate any potential damage. Quality and Risk Management Manager, Audrey Pla, confirmed that immediate measures were implemented to protect the network, and thorough investigations were conducted to assess the extent of the breach. Fortunately, these investigations revealed that no patient or operational data had been compromised during the incident.

Despite the cyberattack, the radiology group has managed to maintain operational continuity, albeit with some adjustments to their usual procedures. The management reassured patients and partners that all necessary examinations and procedures were still being conducted safely, although some delays and complexities in scheduling appointments were anticipated in the days following the attack. The group has been working diligently to return to normal operations and ensure the highest standards of service are upheld during the recovery period.

In response to the cyberattack, the Coradix-Magnescan group has expressed gratitude towards their patients for their patience and understanding during this challenging time. A formal complaint has been filed with the local authorities in Perpignan, and a police investigation is underway to identify the perpetrators behind the cyberattack. This incident underscores the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures, especially in sensitive sectors like healthcare, where patient data and safety are at stake. The group’s proactive response and transparent communication have been key in managing the situation and preventing any further escalation.
